College athletes have been long due of receiving pay for play. Although many scholarships cover tuition and room and board, they do not cover medical needs, food while they are not playing their sport, gas money, school supplies, and clothes. These athletes put 60 hours or more at practice, games, watching film, and working out. This leaves very little time for an extra job, studying, and getting adequate rest. These athletes are why colleges make millions of dollars per year. They are the reason why the NCAA is a billion dollar company. These athletes do 95 percent of the work, and if their lucky they will receive a scholarship. Many of which do not cover all expenses. During the civil war era slaves would work countless hours every day, making their owners rich. All these slaves received for their hard work was somewhere to live and minimum amounts of food. In the modern era, college athletes work 60 or more hours a week ,not counting school, to make their colleges millions of dollars. The benefits college athletes receive for their hard work is a watered-down education, somewhere to live, and according to Shabazz Napier minimum amounts of food. Many people make the argument that college do not make enough money to pay college athletes. This statement is ridiculous. According to Jacob Rodriguez, “ Texas A&M made 192.6 million dollars in 2016.” He also states “ In 2010 the NCAA signed a 14 year 10.8-billion-dollar contract with CBS and Turner Broadcasting.” Many athletic programs make hundreds of millions of dollars each year but still claim that they cannot afford to pay these athletes a minimum
