Being a college athlete can be very stressful and demanding. They have to go to school and maintain their grades like non-athletes while trying to balance games, meets, and daily practices at the same time. They do not have time to work regular jobs or hours. For this reason, advocates for college athletes getting paid have come to light. However, there are many reasons that athletes should not get paid. I believe these reasons overshadow the points of supporters for athlete salaries. These reasons include: lack of funding in majority of schools, a decline in competitiveness, and the inflation of student athletes into bigger schools resulting in “power houses”. The beauty of college sports is the fact that these student athletes put their talents, that they have been gifted with, to work on another level. In comparison to NCAA basketball and the NBA, in my opinion players grind and work a lot harder in college basketball. Not to just shoot to win a championship, but these players work and play as hard as they do because they want ti be make it to where the professional are at. Meanwhile in the NBA, players tend to not play to their full potential night-in and night-out. Also, professionals take games off to rest or to save energy for bigger games. All in all, the NBA players pick and choose when it is competitive in the league, while college basketball players play hard all the time to make it somewhere. Another reason why paying college athletes would mess with the competitive balance is that smaller schools would not be able to offer as much as school such as UCLA.
