When it comes to the topic of legalizing prostitution, most of us readily agree this is a highly debatable, and emotional topic, and at the core is the right of both men and women to have freedom of choice over their sexuality. But when engaging in this topic, one cannot ignore the positive and negative effects of a nation that legalizes prostitution. In my own opinion, I agree with legalizing prostitution because it will help prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, reduce violence and sex trafficking. HIV and AIDS are a reason to legalize prostitution in order to protect women from dangerous commercial sex work environments into safer ones. The reality is that by legalizing prostitution, it becomes impossible for traffickers to keep their sex workers from migrating since they’ll have to look for a country where prostitution is still illegal, that way they’re able to keep the business going and have higher prices. Since they won’t have any restrictions like they would in a country prostitution is legalized. Cathy Reisenwitz a D.C basic writer, made research and wrote the report “Why it’s Time to Legalize Prostitution? “ for which the Amnesty International USA Organization stated that “Amnesty International USA is opposed to the criminalization or punishment of activities related to the buying or selling of consensual sex between adults” (Reisenwitz). Reisenwitz’s point is that instead of working against sex workers, working with them will help rescue sex workers from sex trafficking. For example in Germany, where sex work is legalized, data has shown that between 2001 and 2011 human trafficking has gone down by ten percent. German sex workers are foreign born citizens, but the migrant workers are hardly child sex slaves. There is a minority of underage sex workers who actually work in the prostitution industry.
