Many student athletes devote themselves to their sports while running the risk of injury and not making it to the next level. Even though injury is something very serious when talking about having a career in sports, these athletes still compete. According to Forbes.com, the NCAA currently produces $11 billion in revenue, which is more than the NBA and National Hockey League. $11 billion is an ample amount of funds to reimburse student athletes to show them appreciation and for sacrificing themselves to benefit the NCAA. Bringing recognition, revenue, and endorsements to their school’s programs, collegiate athletes should be compensated. For example, during the 2012-2013 college basketball season the NCAA did a fourteen-year agreement with CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting for $10.4 billion for rights over the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship(NCAA.com). The NCAA do not allow athletes to personally endorse other companies because that’s a violation of the NCAA rules, but the NCAA as a whole have deals with AT&T, Capital One, Coca-Cola, Wendy’s, etc. This means that NCAA profit from another player’s talent. This shows that college athletes are only puppets for the benefit of the whole organization. Recognition does not only bring endorsements, but also professional scouts. These scouts could be for players, but also there are scouts for coaches as well. Nick Saban, the coach of Alabama’s Crimson Tide, had a salary of $7.09 million in 2016(“Updating the SEC’s 2016 head coaching salaries." ). He’s won four national championships since 2007, which is the most titles by a coach. He is recognized for the most dominant football team in college football history. The recognition his football teams bring in puts money in his pockets, not theirs.
