In the book Night by Ellie Wiesel a young boy describes his experiences as a Jew in the concentration camps during World War II. During this time, Wiesel witnessed many horrific acts. Two of these were executions. Though the processes of the executions were similar, the condemned and the Jew’s reactions to the executions differed tremendously. The first execution he describes in his book is one of many that occurred during his time in the camp.

Sheila and her mother, Mrs. Birling, had loved to shop at Milwards until one Sheila had decided to go in to shop by herself to find a dress. As Sheila stared at herself in a mirror with the dress on, she glanced over and caught sight of Eva smiling at the assistant. This had infuriated Sheila as she thought Eva was trying to state that she was prettier, leaving Sheila to state that she would never be back unless Eva was gone. “I went to the manager at Milwards and I told him that if they did not get rid of that girl, I would never go near the place again and I would persuade mother to close our account with them” (23). This quote shows the selfishness as she took a small sight, turned it into anger which then evolved into Sheila to force the Milwards’ manager to fire Eva.
In the play, Estela goes on a date with a man she calls El Tormento where he forces himself on her and tells her that she is beautiful even though she is fat. Estela leaves the date and severs ties with El Tormento because she wants “to be taken seriously, to be considered a person...”(59). Estella doesn’t need El Tormento to validate her self-esteem. This becomes her only responsibility, since she is an artist she "must possess the courageous soul that dares and defies" (139). It takes true courage for her to follow her passion of being a pianist, women of this time are looked down upon for not being a mother or wife. Mademoiselle Reisz finds more importance in being true to herself and her passions rather than the passions society wants for her. While her reasons for courage are based on the time period this story takes place, there are still woman today who receive scrutiny for not having children or not wanting to get married.
