Essay on Sacrifice and Values
In the Bible, the son of God was crucified by the Roman for his “crimes”, however, Jesus sacrifices himself not only for his alleged non compliances with the law, but also for the sins of all of humanity. Similarly, character in 20th century American literature are also required to sacrifice for the betterment of others, however, sometimes the aforementioned characters do not make the sacrifice to save others, but rather, to save their own lives or livelihoods, they sacrifice the greater good for their own profit.

Also, in his story he is forced to sacrifice his love for his wife’s cousin, Mattie, also due to the fact that has to take care of his wife; again showing that his moral compass points true north. Another character that sacrifices is Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald; Gatsby sacrifices his livelihood, his reputation, and ultimately his life to protect Daisy, the woman he loves, this shows his that his rectitude is high and that he is an honorable old sport. Furthermore, Blanche DuBois, from A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams, makes a sacrifice in order to show her sister the truth about Stanley. Blanche is raped by Stanley, which causes her mental state to decompose until she becomes a mumbling mess that her brother-in-law ships to a mental asylum. Blanche’s sacrifice, however, has little effect on her sister, who returns to Stanley after Blanche is sent away. Blanche’s sacrifice shows true love and affection for her sister, and furthermore, high morals.
