Behavior analysts can manipulate the environment within the workplace which can evoke ethical behavior in others and can generate or maintain a culture of ethics. The behavior analyst must first determine if there is a possibility of harm or legal violation, then determine if there is a condition that requires the behavior analyst to report the incident or a regulatory requirement that addresses the violation. If the situation violates the code, then the BACB needs to be notified. If the violation also violates the law, then the proper authorities need to be notified. Then the behavior analyst needs to determine if the client may come to harm. The next step in the process of what to do once an ethical violation is determined is to take the necessary steps to protect the client. Behavior analysts who use “floortime” as part of an intervention violate the ethics code by implementing a non-empirical treatment because it is not data-based, effective, conceptually consistent, or based on behavioral principles (1.01, 2.09, 4.01, 6.01).
