Is the Incident Covered by the Ethics Code? Review the 10 sections of Appendix A of the professional and ethics code for behavior analysts. If the case violates the code in any way, then there is a foundation for going to the next step. The Players: A) The BCBA (or BCaBA or RBT); B) The Client; C) Supervisor; D) Agency Head; E) Other Organizations. The person, the BCBA, BCaBA, or RBT, establishing the effort to make a decision and take the necessary steps to correct the unethical situation. The person in charge needs to sure he or she is strong enough, have the skill set, and the motivation to do what is necessary. The clients benefit from the correction of the unethical situation. Contingency Plans for Ethics: Plan A, Plan B, Plan C: The contingency is a strategy of how to handle the situation and what to do in case something does not go as planned. If plan A does not work, then plan B is implemented, which is tricky if it goes against what he or she was directed to do. Each ethical problem differs and therefore the contingency will also differ. The Skills & Clout: The skills that are the most relevant are: assertiveness, interpersonal communication, leadership, influence, critical thinking, negotiation, “think function”, using shaping effectively, handling difficult people, performance management, understanding and using power, understanding the law and business or government agencies work. The clout is how much sway or influence he or she has to ensure that things can happen. Each contingency plan involves skills and clout to accomplish the plan. If one plan fails, then the next plan ensues. The Risk: A) To the client, B) To others, C) To the behavior Analyst: Reporting or following through with the seven steps could provide trouble if the client or others might have consequences that are
