For, a parent, especially a single parent, there are difficult choices to be made when trying to provide the best for their children. For Shanesha Taylor, she had to make the choice between leaving her two young boys alone in the car while having a job interview or giving up on the job interview that would help her provide for the boys. The ethical dilemma is, does the outcome, Taylor providing for her children, justify leaving them alone in the car. After the authorities of Maricopa County, Arizona, discover the children, they have to make the choice about whether it is right to prosecute a mother who is trying, as best she can, to provide for her children. The values that I think an ethical society should follow are a combination of doing things that will produce a good outcome for the most people but also trying to exhibit moral character. Actions to will be the best for the most people are good unless there is severe and unwarranted harm being done to some part of the population. My ethical values prioritize actions that produce the best outcome for the most people, except in extreme circumstances where that action will cause unjustifiable harm to part of the population. There are many categories of ethics to be considered when faced with an ethical dilemma. Some of them include, Consequentialism, which states that a morally right act is one that will produce a good outcome, Utilitarianism, which states that a morally right act is one that maximizes utility, and Hedonist Utilitarianism, which states that a morally right act is one that maximizes pleasure and minimizes pain. Taylor’s choice to leave her two young children alone in the car was influence by her being unemployed and not affording child care. Had Taylor been white, she would have likely not been placed in such a difficult position. Societies perception of her and her choice would have been different if she was white because single black mothers are assumed to be bad mothers. Also, the Attorney might have decided not to pursue legal action against Taylor or would have been more lenient with the demands and Taylor failing to meet the demands on time. For, black mothers, especially single black mothers, they must conform to patriarchal gender roles and stereotypes and fulfill the parental responsibilities that society values.
