The Company of Fair Trade has proven to be a successfully ethical business that is growing in the market place not only with foods such as chocolate but also in the clothing industry. In the article “Ethical Fashion On Rise in Wake of Disaster” written by Elena Panaritis it gives an example of the disastrous work place for a distressed factory worker by the name of Reshma Begum. Reshma was working in a factory with such terrible conditions that it quite literally fell apart around her. The company’s neglect of working conditions had let to the collapse of the building and killing over 1,100 factory workers. Reshma survived off of four packets of cookies and some water until rescued (Panaritis). It is sad that people in the world are struggling so much with conditions of their own that the only place of work has no ethical standards of safety or social responsibility for their employees. With that in mind Fair Trade has outside third party’s that focuses on areas like health and safety, chemical use, women’s empowerment, and grievance procedures (Panaritis). The article also describes how Fair Trade gives back to the community. Fair Trade lets their employees earn an additional premium for their work. With these funds the employees also have the freedom to choose how they would like for it to be spent. One community chose to spend the money Workers have voted to support women’s healthcare programs, buy raincoats, give out bonuses, support scholarships for girls, and build schools in their communities (Panaritis).
