This week’s discussion topic centers on corporate behavior, specifically on companies that overtly exhibit a strong image of ethical behavior. There are many ways that companies can do so through marketing and publishing a mission statement, and additionally by promoting the ethical activities, processes, and goals that are practiced by the company. This discussion will review the stewardship actions and goals the outdoor product store, REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) REI is a national company, based in the United State of America, with 149 retail locations across the country, in 36 states. In addition, external stockholders who have an interest in the success of REI are the local towns where stores or distribution centers are located and other companies in the supply-chain (manufacturers, transportation providers, shipping materials supplier) – there may be others, but these are the most visible. As very clear examples of REI’s environmentally ethical behavior, the company website lists out environmentally-friendly business practices including: • “Green” building construction • Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across company- building emissions and calculating these from corporate travel (airline costs, hotels, and rental cars) • Installing charging stations for electric cars at some locations. • Seeking sustainable energy sources such as solar panels for some locations • More efficient HVAC and removal of Freon from systems • Skylights in stores (natural lighting) and emergency efficient bulbs • Aspiring to have zero waste landfills by 2020 • Responsible management of paper-based office
