Ethical issues are important rules that people and organizations set for others to follow. Ethical issues inform individuals of things that are okay and not okay to do in a professional setting. Consequences for not following ethical issues include, temporary leave, termination, lawsuit, etc. The textbook Issues and Ethics in the Helping Profession lists a variety of ethical issues that professionals must follow. In chapter seven, two ethical issues that really stand out are social relationships with clients and boundaries. I learned that it is not okay to become friends with a client for several reasons. Although faculty is responsible for training therapist, the therapist is responsible in making sure they are receiving the necessary training they need to become a competent practitioner. Therapist competence can become an ethical issue if the therapist do not receive the required training and skills to work effectively and appropriately to treat clients in a specific area (Corey). While in counseling therapist must use the techniques they usually use and are trained to use. It becomes an ethical issue when therapist start using a variety of techniques they are not familiar with just to help their client. It becomes an ethical and legal issue when the therapist agrees to work with a client who has a diagnostic that the therapist is not familiar with. The reason why this is considered a legal and ethical issue is because the therapist would not be providing the help the client actually needs.
