For any business to be successful they must have structures and internal institutions in place that push the company in the right direction. Just like they need to have a human resources department or an accounting department, a company also must have a way to deal with and enforce ethics from the inside. In this journal entry I will go through the main three ethical structures that companies choose to enforce from within. The first kind of Ethical corporate structure is a Corporate Credo. A credo is a short set of ethical guidelines that is meant to set the ethical standard for the company. This is known as the Culture approach to Ethics. Trying to integrate the aspects of the credo into the everyday culture inside the company. This structure works best on smaller businesses because of how simple it is. When this option was discussed in class it was not talked about fondly. Ethics program are a form of training and seminars that are designed to teach employees to make more ethical choices. Some companies that implement this have employees go on some sort of a retreat and all learn together, but the cheaper and more popular version of this is to have employees take an online course. The pros of this choice are that it has some sort of consistency throughout the company, it can point out some applicable circumstances and how they can be resolved, and it can also remove some of the legal liability from the company. Some of the cons that are associated with it is that it has been called to ‘issue centered’, it can be a short term or ineffective fix, and sometimes it cannot reach all the employees that it should.
