Police brutality has been occurring since the idea of a police officer was first brought up. Officers have found many holes through the law enforcement system. This brings upon many types of misconduct and excessive force. Unfortunately, police officers are not usually held accountable for their brutality. “The Incentive Program, or the method of police chiefs using promises of contraband going to sub-departments that lack the money in the budget, gives officers more incentive to not only plant evidence to make an entire estate contraband, but it also lets them rationalize lining their own pockets” (White).
Police brutality is an ongoing dilemma in the United States and the current issue relating to it was Freddie Gray’s death in police custody. This was a very important incident that months later would lead to violent riots in
Twenty-three years after Rodney King’s beating, police brutality is on the rise more than ever. On March 3, 1991 Rodney King led police on a high speed chase through the streets of Los Angeles County before finally surrendering. An intoxicated Rodney King resisted arrest and upon doing so he was brutally beaten by police officers. An 89-second video of Rodney King being beaten was filmed and released to the press. The video shows police officers Laurence Powell, Theodore Briseno, Timothy Wind and Stacey Koon, beating King with their batons.

After analyzing the video, I believe that excessive use of force was presented in the Rodney King arrest. The excessive use of force was first seen as soon as Mr. King went down on the ground and the first police officer used his baton to strike Mr. King. After that, the next scene is another police officer pulling out his baton to strike Mr. King as well. It also shows that the police officers are using their foot to kick Mr. King. That is the moment when excessive use of forced have been used.
King. America learned at this time that there is a problem with excessive force being used in American policing (“5 Ways the Rodney King Beating and LA Riots Changed America”). After America saw the police drag Rodney out of his vehicle, put him on the ground face first, and beat on him excessively, many Americans felt that the police were using their power in wrong ways. Because of this, changes in the way police are hired and a focus on police relationships with the communities they serve happened. It also brought on many discussions of how juries are made up and where trials take place.
The numbers in the police are falling short in order to successfully create peace within the country. As a result, many police officers feel they have to abuse their power and go to extremes to stop criminals. One of the biggest problems with police brutality is the disgusting racist police culture and how they treat minorities such as blacks and Hispanics. On the third of March, 1991, a black man named Rodney King was involved in a high-speed car chase with officers from the Los Angeles Police Department. The officers were successful with pulling King over.
Is there really justice in America? Where is the justice for all the victims of police brutality? Why are the police officers always getting off easy for doing unjust actions towards blacks? Where is the justice for Rodney King, Alton Sterling, Michael Brown Jr., Eric Garner, Sean Bell, Tamir Rice? Those are just some of the victims who have died in the hands of officers from being beaten or shot to death for minor crimes or just being a person of color.
The reason as to why police brutality is unethical is simple. It kills a lot of people and is not necessary. However, what are the reasons as to why police brutality has become such a problem in the United States? One can argue the police officers take advantage of how much authority their occupation comprises of. If a cop shoots and murders a person, they claim that they were using self-defense or some other kind of excuse.
Police Brutality In today's society, it is not uncommon for police officer misconduct, including brutality, to gain everyone's attention. When one officer shoots and kills a suspect, that officer is investigated in order to ensure there was no intentions to harm anyone but to try and keep the peace. Intentional harm to citizens is considered police brutality and can escalate into something more serious such as riots and protests. The kind of misconduct that some police take when arresting a suspect cannot be taken lightly to prevent any sort of riots or protests such as those after Rodney King as 50 people were killed and hundreds more were injured (Katel).
Police brutality is a strong and still ongoing activity that occurs till this day. It is a worldwide situation that needs to be confronted and handled immediately. There have been thousands of lives lost from unfair police officers; even little children’s lives have been taken away from them. Police officers are supposed to be our heroes and people that make us feel safe, not the enemy and whom majority of the people fear.
Police brutality remains a common yet controversial topic around the world. Police brutality is “the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians” (thelawdictionary.org). It’s a topic that segregates communities and makes each other their enemy. Specifically, a white officer has been the enemy of the black community. Unfortunately, the tension between police and blacks grew over the past few decades.
Over the years, countries have witnessed many cases of police brutality, which has tremendously increased since the 80’s. Every day, officers are faced with many threatening situations, forcing them to make split-second decisions all the while simultaneously both expecting the worst along and hoping for the best. Police officers shouldn't have more power than any other human-being on this planet just because they wear a badge on their chest especially given the power to take any citizen's rights away, even their lives. Police brutality contains a lot of ethos, racism, and pathos because police are meant to protect society from harm, First of all, police brutality is hypocrisy, police should be properly trained so they do not resort to violence and abuse of its power. It’s illegal for a cop to violate someone's rights; police officers are suppose to be trusted and expected to respect society as a whole.
Police Brutality is an ongoing problem and existent concern in the United States and should be resolved immediately. Law enforcement must function as an element that consists of organized and civilized officers. The presence of police brutality is becoming more of an issue as society grows. The problem posed by the illegal exercise of police power is an ongoing reality for individuals of a disfavored race, class, or sexual orientation. Police brutality must be stopped so that police do not forget who they are serving – not themselves, but the public.
Police brutality will be an issue until a solution is created. Many individuals are victims of this form of assault on daily basis. The liberties held by law enforcement are challenged each time they perform their duties. Police officers should abide by the same laws that each citizen is expected to abide by. Although police officers are granted with the right to determine laws as constitutional, civilians are sometimes treated in ways that are beyond unlawful.
