Ethics of Animal Testing Visualize a world in which animals are put on the same pedestal as human beings. In this world, the value of a human’s life goes hand in hand with the value of an animal’s life because all creatures are equal. The world, however, is not based off of Dr. Dolittle, and typically does place more value on a human being’s life than an animal’s. Because of this rationale, medical testing on animals has already been able to save an astonishing amount of human lives due to findings in cures for diseases and medicines. In addition to saving lives, animal testing is viewed to be ethically accepted because of its long lasting benefit and constant improvement in today's society. In replacing animals with humans, it brings up an apparent question as to why society is purposely using animals for such malevolent testing on a daily basis (Kolar, 2006). In correspondence with ethics, the government has created acts in which animal testing must follow a precise procedure while being conducted; furthermore, it is an obligation for the scientists to treat research animals with the utmost respect. Legislative findings by Kolar explain how “experiments must be indispensable for specified purposes, suffering or distress must be ethically justifiable, and the 3Rs must be applied wherever possible” (Kolar, 2006, p.116). Provided that scientists follow all three of the jurisdictions, they are attempting to keep their research as ethical as possible. The three Rs include the concepts of reduction, refinement, and replacement of animals being used in medical research (Ferdowsian & Beck, 2011). Scientists sincerely try to use the least amount of animals necessary in finding ways to obtain their desired results.
