There were just few African-Americans and Mexicans and I could barely find Asians. The lack of diversity in my high school could be seen clearly in lunch time. The University of Oklahoma has one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation. Everybody that attends the University of Oklahoma is considered part of the “OU Family”. I come from a Mexican family who is low context and very conservative. They value having relationships within their own race. When I came to the United States, I learned to appreciate other cultures and ethnicities better. I have never seen race the way my family looks at it. If they marry someone, it would have to be within the culture.
Especially when I take a look at the dynamics of the people I have met. Growing up from birth to middle school majority of my friends were white. I had some black friends too but I primarily chose my friends on things we had in common. My mother found this very concerning that I would only bring my white friend over to the house.
During childhood I was taught my parents that I was to respect every body no matter if they looked different than me. Having grown in such a diversity community I never encountered problems with people form different racial or ethnic background. I believe it is a blessing to have grown up in such a diverse community because you get to see interaction between people from different cultures. I do not live in fear of people assuming negative things about me when I walk into a room. I have a presumed higher social status, I have the freedom to move, to work and speak freely without my race coming into play. I am able to help define the societal norm. I am presumed to be intelligent and making a positive impact on society. My whiteness does not work against me in my job performance.
If the movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have such a negative impact on public health, should steps be taken to reduce these flows? What other options are there for lowering the spread of global diseases? American families were considered to be conservative, yet liberal in comparison with other types of families from other countries. American families were composed of a few kids, married parents, pets and the rate of divorce was lower in comparison to recent years. Through time, all this has been changing and it is common to see more diversity in American families nowadays. Those changes can have factors like people have become more liberals and their point of view of marriage and family may have different meanings for them than what those two words meant in the last few years.
This essay discusses how the family is viewed by two different sociological perspectives- functionalism and conflict theory. Firstly, ‘family’ is defined. Secondly, the main ideas of functionalism will be discussed followed by how this theory perceives the family. The main ideas of Conflict Theory will then be examined and how conflict theorists perceive the family.
Families have many different ways they could be defined. I would describe my family as being blended. My brother has a different father than me, and he is still considered family. This aspect is important in my concept of family because even if I do not talk to them everyday, I still have this connection where they will support the decisions that I want to make even if it is not an opinion that everyone agrees with. On the contrary, there is definitely diversity by having a blended family, especially since they have been a part of most of my life.
