In the film Roanoak there are many characters that show ethnocentricity. Also there are many characters that were being treated with ethnocentricity such as Wanchese. The word ethnocentricity means to assume that culture is superior or to assume, that other cultures follow your principles. The film took place in the late sixteenth century. The most ethnocentric events consist of when the English name the land Virginia, and when the drunk Englishmen messed up the religious festival, the kiss, and all the times the Roanoak had to feed the English. One of the ethnocentric events that led to Wanchese leaving the village to speak to the conjurer was a little farther along in the movie. It was when the English named the Roanoak’s land Virginia. The scene was very ethnocentric because the English believed they had rights to the land even though they just got there. They also assumed they were superior, thinking they were allowed to be on the land to begin with. The English should have tried to maybe look for another piece of land that wasn’t all ready being used by a group of people such as the Roanoak’s. Now after the English came most of their food was eaten by mice. Which meant they didn’t have enough food to live off of. So the Roanoke’s were nice enough to feed them, all they want. John White noticed that Govoner Lane was taking advantage of how grateful the Chief was. So he and his troops decided to go hunting while Governor Lane’s troops or side went searching for hunting knowing that the Chief would feed him. This ethnocentric because he assumed that sense he was superior that he could make the Roanoke’s his servants.
