This dissertation is valid as it allows for further reinforcement of the continuous interest that the armed forces shows in the use of Outdoor education, As I am aspiring to have a pertinent military career and currently an undergraduate student studying Outdoor education. This piece of work will allow me to collect highly sufficient data which can be adjourned through the use of a suitably selected research method. the project will address how Outdoor education can facilitate the militaries core ethos and values of Courage, Discipline, Selfless commitment, Respect for others, Integrity, Loyalty (British Army, Ethos & Values, Pamphlet, 1(1) ). It must also be noted that this literature review is conditional to the time of submission. Baden Powell's work (Baden-Powell, 1908) was a catalyst for many other practitioners and illustrators to start to look in to the benefits of Outdoor education and it's link in to effective military leadership. On review of much literature many commentators raise the question of how effective Outdoor education is to military personnel and what relevance does it hold, we tend to hear phrases such as like ‘improved self-confidence’, ‘increased self-knowledge’, ‘better able to work in a team with others’, ‘becomes more open and caring’ (Neil & Richards, 1998).
