Alfred Green uses ethos to build his credibility and pathos to use people emotions in an attempt to gain support. He builds credibility by alluding to a speech given by Thomas Paine in lines 21-22, which shows that he is educated. He also shows his education when talking about famous and successful leaders. He also builds credibility with African Americans because he, too, is African American. By appearing to be well educated, it convinces African Americans to accept Green’s argument as he seems credible and intelligent. Green also appeals to the reader’s emotions when he talks in lines 7-8 about love of country despite its flaws. This may convince free African Americans to join the to make the country better.
