“2+2=5”, This quote shows how the government of Oceania did not allow their people original and own thought, if they could not accept these thoughts to be true they would be tortured into believing and then eventually killed. There are three main things that compare the Soviet Union to the government formed within the country of Oceania, INGSOC. The three main comparisons we can make are torture within both parties, the use of slogans to manipulate the minds of the citizens, and the two main leaders of both parties. In this essay, we are first going to talk about how the Soviet Union used torture on enemies of the party to force confessions out of them. Throughout the rule of the USSR there were three main slogans said throughout the government and people to control how the citizens thought and viewed the government. One of the slogans were, “Peace, Bread, Land.” This offered the citizens a sense of security. Peace meant an end to the war. Bread represented relief from their hunger. Land meant self-sufficiency for the population of the “Peasants.” Another slogan used within the USSR was, “All power to the Soviets.” This was a promise to the workers that they would have a government run by workers and would have all power. Who just like Stalin had complete control over Oceania and the citizens. “At the apex of the pyramid comes Big Brother. Big Brother is infallible and all-powerful. Every success, every achievement, every victory, every scientific discovery, all knowledge, all wisdom, all happiness, all virtue, are held to issue directly from his leadership and inspiration.”, part two, chapter nine, page one hundred seventy one. This quote explains exactly how in Oceania Big Brother is credited with every good outcome that comes from within Oceania. It is said throughout the book that Big Brother will never die and INGSOC will never fall. Big Brother had eyes everywhere, in the homes of the citizens, in shops, in the streets, everywhere. “Big Brother is watching you,” chapter one, page five. This was a caption under a poster of an image of who Big Brother is imagined to be, although no one had actually ever seen him. It serves as a reminder to the citizens that everything they say and do is being watched. The citizens of the Soviet Union were of course not always being watched but they still
