There are three appeals that focus on specific effects of an argument which is logos, ethos and pathos. Logos is logic and reason, ethos is credibility and trust, and pathos is emotion and empathy. In “Federico’s Ghost,” by Martin Espads, the poem provides an appeal to pathos. The main message of the poem was about how the crop duster didn’t care about Federico and the workers in the field. Martin Luther King is known throughout the United States and possibly the world for his work in civil rights and the large movement in 1954 to 1968. After a protest on April 12th he and 50 other civil rights leaders were arrested. In a span of four days Martin Luther King wrote a 7,000 word letter addressed to a group of Christian and Jewish religious leaders who criticized the protest and King as well, calling him an outside agitator. In this letter there are many uses of ethos, pathos, and logos. Martin Luther King uses ethos when making credible connections to real people and events that occurred in the near present or past.

Ray Bradbury 's “The Veldt” takes place in a house that can do anything the want which results in the main characters-George, Lydia, Peter, and Wendy Hadley not sharing a strong bond with their family. You end up having no connection to your family so you have trouble communicating and having feelings for them which results in even though the machines don’t have any feelings or connections having to machines more that other people this shows how when people use technology too much or machines. People become to rely on them too much which dehumanises them and Bradbury shows that by symbolism, imagery and dialogue. Ray Bradbury uses symbolism to show how machines dehumanise people. If giving out false information to persuade an audience is untruthful then why as a society we are still reaching for the untruthful? Persuasion is alternatively what all advertisements are aiming for no matter if it is for a product or idea. Over the use of methods like ethos, pathos, and logos advertisements become more appealing and compelling to everyday people. War propagandas especially utilize the methods, ethos and pathos to support the idea of glorify American and demonize enemies. The credibility of normal citizens was demonstrated throughout war propagandas to help develop their philosophy.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an important figure in gaining civil rights throughout the 1960’s and he’s very deserving of that title as seen in both his “I Have a Dream” speech and his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” letter. In both of these writings Dr. King uses logos - logical persuasion - and pathos - emotional appeal - to change the opinions of people who were for segregation and against civil rights. Although King was arrested for a nonviolent protest, he still found a way to justify his actions with the use of logos and pathos.
