Kinder Eggs, Guns, and Children

Ads convey bold and clear statements by using rhetoric. However, the rhetoric used in ads can differ in effectiveness. The difference can be seen between two ads by the organizations Moms Demand Action and States United To Prevent Gun Violence. Both advertisements are regarding the same issue, but utilize ethos, pathos and logos differently to persuade the audience. The aspects of rhetoric in both ads are similar, but the effectiveness of the rhetoric in each ad differs. Rhetoric can diverge in its effectiveness just by the way an advertisement presents itself. The organizations are successful in their use of rhetoric in their ads, but certain aspects of rhetoric are better in one ad more than the other.

The emotions this ad stirs are very powerful. The familiar male NRA silhouette target on top of weathered brown paper is a normal sight (States United To Prevent Gun Violence). However, within the silhouette are two outlines of a woman and a baby. The image resembles a family. On top the targets are number scores with the bull’s-eye in the center of the baby’s head and in the top left corner of the ad there is a scorecard. A target like this is meant to leave the audience with an ominous feeling. The quote in big bold letters at the top right of the ad states, ”Bullets leave bigger holes than you think,” which makes the audience realize how the loss of a parent or child would horrendously affect a family (States United To Prevent Gun …show more content…

SUPVG and MDA are both reputable organizations amongst politicians and communities, but they did not rely on ethos in their advertisement to get their message across. The Pathos is clear-cut and persuasive in the ad by SUPVG. However, MDA’s usage of pathos is more compelling and complex, which makes the audience think longer about the effects of gun violence. The logos are good in both ads, but SUPVG’s logic is more potent and reminds people that gun violence effects more than just the victim. Each advertisement utilizes rhetoric brilliantly to properly convey its message. These two ads show that there are various aspects of rhetoric that can be used to convey the same message of gun sense. Even though various aspects of rhetoric vary in their effectiveness in each advertisement, both organizations were able to convey their call for more gun
