The book “Zeitoun” written by Dave Eggers focuses on Zeitoun and Kathy a muslim couples point of view on Hurricane Katrina and how muslims were treated in the 21st Century. He expresses his feelings about how muslims were treated in the 21st century by appealing to ethos, pathos, and logos. Dave Eggers interviewed Kathy and Zeitoun and did research for years before he officially published the book “Zeitoun” which appeals to ethos because he is giving credit to himself by citing his resources and research. In the book “Zeitoun” Eggers persuades us that Abdulrahman Zeitoun was a hero during the hurricane katrina by giving credibility to what Zeitoun had done to help his community. Eggers appeals to logos again when the preacher cuts Kathy off when she talked about how she was investing in Islam. “She was looking to Islam!” he said with a sneer. “She was considering”-Pause- “The worship of Allah!” and with that, he made a snorting, derisive sound, the sort of sound an eight-year old boy would make on a playground (66). This showed how the preacher thought of Kathy, he thought she was foolish thinking the two religions were similar, and is technically discriminating the Islam religion. Eggers appeals to pathos about Kathy feeling insulted so that is why she decided to convert into Islam. “Did he not know that his God and Islam’s were the one and the same?” (66). Kathy felt like Christianity and Islam were similar because Allah in arabic meant god and when Christians are speaking arabic they refer god to Allah. In part 4 of the story Zeitoun was arrested because he was suspected of being members of al Qaeda. “You are al Qaeda”- the soldier said (212). It is not fair because Zeitoun was taken into a utility closet, and was accused instead of being given a chance to speak. Eggers is persuading us that it is not right to accuse someone without asking them questions or giving them a chance to prove that they’re innocent with a serious and disappointing tone.
