Etsy was created in a small Brooklyn apartment in 2005 by Rob Kalin and two of his friends, Chris Maguire, and Haim Schoppik. Kalin had a passion for woodwork and a deep desire to turn a hobby into a career. Unable to find an already easily accessible market to peddle his wares, Kalin along with his two friends created the website Etsy, the perfect place to do just that (Brown, 2016). Etsy’s sole purpose was to create a peer-to-peer e-commerce website focused on homemade and vintage goods. Kalin and his two friends wrote the code, created and designed the website, and amassed the servers for the creation of Etsy. B Corp certification is provided by an organization known as B Labs. B Corp certifications indicate a certain level of environmental and social conscientiousness that goes above and beyond what is reasonably expected of corporations (B Corporation, 2016). For example, Etsy is very generous to its employees giving them unlimited sick days, 40 hours of paid volunteer time, and a health benefits package paid 100% by the company. Etsy implemented waste management systems which circumvent traditional refuse disposal processes, e.g., landfills, incinerators. For expectant and new mothers Etsy offers over 60 days of paid maternity leave, and also provides two weeks of paid paternity leave (Grose, 2016). Overall, Etsy was awarded a B-Score of 127, which is exponentially higher than other B Corps, considering the median score of 55 (B Corporation, 2016). Etsy’s B Corporation certification reveals much of the true character of the company. Etsy’s primary goal is empowering local economies with global customers. While attempting this goal, Etsy strives to conduct themselves in a manner far above their competitors. Having a clean, attractive web page that displays wares in a good light not only attracts customers, but also entices these customers into making purchases. Seller’s who understand these concepts are rewarded with greater success in their Etsy store, while those that eschew these principles will find themselves struggling to find growth. Mastering these nonverbal communication techniques are very beneficial to an Etsy seller, but are not the only communication techniques utilized in Etsy enterprises. Sellers have other means to communicate with potential buyers as well. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are common mediums for promoting a growing Etsy store. These platforms are preferred over others for their large user base, as well as their quick-to-digest content.
