Have you ever worked at a fast food joint before? Well, a majority of teenagers have, and are currently working in places like: Mcdonalds, Wendy’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and etc. Teens want to hit the ground running when it comes to working for some cold hard cash. Sadly, many adults believe that jobs like that are unhealthy for adolescents. No, not just the food they make, the work environment itself. Many adults and fellow parents believe that teens are way too maturely underdeveloped to acquire and work in the world. Although teenagers are stereotyped as immature and irresponsible; teenagers (with the right steps) can become efficient and knowledgeable individuals in the work force. An essay, written by Amitai Etzioni, talks about his belief of teens working at Mcdonald’s like restaurants. Now, at some points I can agree on the beneficial and not so beneficial aspects of working as a teen. But, what Mr. Etzioni fails to bring into fruition, is only the beneficial aspects of skills in the workplace. Which isn’t entirely false in the first place. In many cases I have seen friends go from balancing out school with Mcdonald's, to having failing grades and working 30 hours a week. Etzioni says that “Among those 14 to 17, a third of fast food employees (including some school dropouts) labor more than 30 hours hours per week” (Etzioni 317) I would think at this point teens would have to make a decision to either quit their job or quit school.
