In April of 1963, Martin Luther KIng Jr. Traveled to Birmingham, Alabama to hold a peaceful protest against racism and how African Americans were being treated. Due to the following he was thrown in jail for it being illegal. He later wrote “Letter From Birmingham Jail '' to show his intelligence against racism. In the “Letter From Birmingham Jail,” by Martin Luther King Jr. he was thrown in jail because he did an illegal peaceful protest. He protested illegally because he knew that the form wouldn’t be accepted. In Birmingham he wrote what inspired him because of the preachers criticizing him. The letter exclaims, “now, what is the difference between the two? How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law” (3). He writes this because he’s saying how can a law be fair if it is man-made and it doesn’t go for the majority so it is biased. To indicate, he exclaims how the treatment of African Americans geting promises broken. The letter states, “as the weeks and months unfolded we realized that we were the victims of a broken promise” (2). The promise that was broken was the mayor and the higher officials to take down white and black billboards but they didn’t follow through with the promise. On the whole, King demonstrates how a man-made law is unjust, a promise being broken because of color and also always being told to wait. The “wait” will never happen. How is something fair if it is a man-made law, how do we know if it is biased. Higher officials said it would happen but it didn’t go through so it wasn’t a held promise.
