A middle aged women has been terminally ill for the last ten months and all she wants is for the pain to stop. A ninety-three year old man has no family left and his only desire is to see his deceased wife again. The happiness these two people felt is no longer recognizable. A very favorable option for these patients could be Euthanasia, or the painless killing of a patient using very strong drugs. Euthanasia is currently legal in four states in the United States of America. Many more states are currently in debate over whether this drug is ethical to administer to their people. Euthanasia gives the patients, who have no hope of getting better, the right to choose how they want to live the rest of their life. This right, is just one of many …show more content…
Many people, including Jekyll from the book Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, choose this way to stop the pain that consumes them. Furthermore, Euthanasia should be deemed ethical based on the patient's inability to get better, their constitutional right to choose and the ideas presented by Jekyll in the book Jekyll and Hyde. Euthanasia is a great way for patients who do not have the opportunity to get better to undergo a painless and peaceful death. Euthanasia is a much quicker and more productive option than expensive and time consuming palliative care (“Aid in Dying Movement Advances”). If a patient is sick for a very long time, the only thing they desire is a world filled with happiness and no pain. They do not want to have to deal with this agonizing pain any longer. In their excruciating pain, the only thing people should do is abide to their needs. In many states where Euthanasia is not legal “...some terminal patients manage to get a lethal dose of drugs from medical professionals under the table, which exposes the health care workers to prosecution. Others are advised to starve themselves to death”(“Aid in Dying Movement Advances”). If some patients are …show more content…
One argument is that the patient does not have the right to decide when they die. Some may argue that this is not a right given to the people of the world, but a right that is given to the universe, and only the universe should be allowed to decide when you die. What this argument fails to consider is that the end is coming eventually. Death is inevitable. If death is coming eventually, then patients should be allowed to decide when it happens depending on how comfortable they are. Also, it is your life, so no one should make your major life decisions for you. You are the one that decides when things should happen, not the “universe”. Another argument against the legalization of Euthanasia is that it goes against the divinity of God and is unreligious. Some people say that God is behind the universe and that he is the one that decides when you should die. This argument may seem convincing at first, but furthering your research will help you realize that God wants you to be happy. If you are not happy with the life you are living, then God will also be able to see and sense your unhappiness. He will accept the fact that your happiness comes first, and if this is what you want, then you can do it. If you are a religious person then you would also know that when you make this change you will get to
