Every school has an international student handbook which is essentially a tool for international students utilize in times of need and to deal with different situations. There are a few essential policies that any type of student handbook must include, (Meador):
1. Attendance Policy
2. Bullying Policy
3. Dress code Policy
4. Fighting Policy
5. Respect Policy
6. Student Code of Conduct
7. Student Discipline
Checking of the list of policies mentioned in SHSU International Student Handbook in accordance to the list of policies mentioned above; it only contains policies regarding clothes, attendance, respect, discipline and the code of conduct. For SHSU to expect its new entrants to fully utilize the handout and benefit from the information provided, it needs to make it in a proper format so that the individuals using it don’t have difficulty in surfing through it.
The issue with today’s generation is that the students are bombarded with so much information as soon as they enter the university and when they receive the handbook; they promptly stuff it in a drawer without ever reading it. It is crucial for Sam Houston State University to explicitly state the importance of their handbook and create awareness of its value to the international students in the initial orientation meetings. Educational psychologists have figured out in the international studies pertaining to the “influence of prior knowledge on new learning”; which clearly state that those students who have a complete sense of awareness of their surroundings tend to fully show their true potential in terms of their performance in that particular environment
