Defining Education: Evaluating Liberal Arts Education Education has been a cornerstone of human civilization since ancient times, but defining what constitutes a vital education has always been a matter of intense debate. The Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines education as: “The action or process of educating or of being educated also: a stage of such a process, the knowledge and development resulting from the process of being educated, the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools.” (Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, s.v. "education"). These are all basic definitions barely scratching the surface of the elaborate concept of what education entails. This type of education offers students a diverse and well-rounded curriculum that covers a wide range of subjects from the humanities to the sciences and the arts. It places a strong emphasis on developing critical thinking skills, creativity, and intellectual curiosity. Its main goal is to produce students who are adaptable, open-minded, and capable of tackling complex problems. However, while it’s not perfect, after exploring deeper there are still far less problems with this system of education compared to others. In this essay, I will provide my definition of education and evaluate whether liberal arts education meets the criteria for a well-rounded education or not. Through exposure to a diverse range of subjects and perspectives, students are able to develop the ability to approach complex problems with an unbiased outlook. By asking probing questions and delving deep into the nuances of issues, they are able to hone their critical thinking skills. This helps them in preparing not only for a plethora of career paths but also for active participation in their communities. I find this aspect of liberal arts education is aligned with my personal definition of education, as I believe that cultivating critical thinking abilities is an essential aspect of any well-rounded curriculum.
