Simon and Garfunkel is a two-person folk rock band that started in 1957. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met as children in Queens, New York, where they learned to harmonize together and began writing music together. Simon and Garfunkel lived in the same neighborhood and attended the same school, where they began performing as a duo at school dances. The two enjoyed listening to the band, the Everly Brothers. While trying to memorize the lyrics to one of the Everly Brother's songs, they created their song. They had their song recorded at a studio in Manhattan. While Simon and Garfunkel were recording, Sid Prosen, a promoter overheard them, and after getting permissions from the parents, he signed them to his label, Big Records with the name, "Tom and Jerry," at the age of 15. In 1958, after graduating from high school, they were exploring possibilities for a music career, but continued their education and parted ways. While still with Big Records, Simon released a solo single, which upset Garfunkel, who called it a betrayal. They did one last recording with Big Records, but the company became bankrupt after the release, and their band, "Tom and Jerry," were disbanded. When it says, “When tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all...when evening falls so hard, I will comfort you, I’ll take your part, oh, when darkness comes, and pain is all around, like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down,” all I could think of when I was listening to this song, was Psalm 23. It doesn’t mention who “I” is, but it sounds like they are talking about God. This song is Simon’s best-known song, and when he was writing this, he borrowed bits from the gospel song, “Mary Don’t You Weep.” I think Simon got his inspiration for this song from the gospel song and Psalm
