“Sentimental Value” Do you always get what you want? Is what you want a necessity? In a classic rock song, the Rolling Stones sing, “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find you get what you need.” There is no denying, that this quote can relate to everybody. We don’t always get what we want, but if we really work hard then we might get what we need. However, the sad truth of the nature is that sometimes no matter how hard we try, we don’t get anything. If you are lucky enough then, yes sometimes we get more what we want, but sometimes it just seems like we run out of luck. When she came back, she liked it so much that she said “she needs it.” She asked her mother weather she could have it, but mother told her “she promised Maggie that she would give it to her when she gets married. Dee got upset so she started to argue with her mother. When Maggie hear the arguments, she said “she can have them Mama, I can remember Grandma Dee without the quits (Walker 423).” This made the mother realize that Maggie deserved it more because she wanted them as a reminder of her past. Dee wanted to hang the quilts to remember her grandmother. She admits to her mother that she wanted to use it to show off and to put a price on it. She said “she’d probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use” to her mother (walker 422)”. This shows that she looked down to her sister. She did not like the way she was living her life. That was the first time her mother ever said “No” to her. She gets angry and drive away with Hakim. Before leaving, she say negative things about her own heritage and tell them to change their life just because she didn’t get what she wanted. Maggie got the quilts.
