When two children are brought up in the same household by the same parents raised in the same environment, one may think that these children will come out very alike or at least have very similar qualities. But In the short story, “Everyday Use” this does not apply although Maggie and Dee are sisters and they were raised in the same household, Maggie and Dee are very different from one another. They differ in appearance, family values and personality.
In the beginning of the story the narrator who is Maggie and Dee’s mother reveals the difference in the characters for instant, she begins by saying “Maggie is not as attractive as Dee. She is a thin and awkward girl. Her mother said "good looks passed her by”. Therefore, she carries herself like someone with low self-esteem, "chin on chest, eyes on ground" but when it comes to Dee. Her mother describes as an attractive woman “Dee is lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure.” She also takes pride of her appearance when Dee arrived for her visit her mother said as she came out of the car. “even her feet were always neat looking.” …show more content…

Maggie was never ashamed of her home, she accepted her future. She knows she will marry John Thomas and have a humble life. But on the other hand, Dee wants more, she wants an education to surpass Maggie and her mother. Maggie continues submerging in her background she stayed with her mother to learn her mother’s traditions, such as quilting. Dee learned about her roots by going off from her family, in fact, she is so detached from her own roots that she feels the need to change her name to “Wangero” a name from a heritage other than her
