In the story, Everything Is Okay, the main character wants to make decisions that make him different from his family. He is powerless to make decisions and control as a young child; he makes choices different from what his family would make, and he wants to make his own decisions and choose how he grows up. An example of the main character being unable to make decisions as he is powerless and young is when he tells his mom that the kitten is his "and it's going to be my pet." Unfortunately, he gets no feedback from his mother. This example shows that his mom doesn't take his consideration for desiring a pet of his own. An instance of this happening is during suppertime. The main character tries to eat the venison from the deer one of the main character's brothers killed. The thought of venison made the main character "want to throw up." The main character's father says it's a "waste of good meat." His brother then calls the main character a "sissy" for not eating the venison. This example shows that the main character's choice not to eat venison causes his father and brother to react like it's an unusual decision. Another example of the main character making choices his family would not make is during supper time after the visit to the vet. The main character leaves the dining table and sits in the dark living room. He has to think about what it will be like to be alone with no siblings in the house and how to do things without an "older brother to help me." This text shows that the main character has to think about what it's like to not have any older brothers in the house since he is the youngest child.
