America has evolved as a country in many different ways and on many different scales. While there has been a plethora of information on the growth and development of things such as industry and technology, there are several topics that do not get as much attention yet are prevalent among society both in the past and in the present. The arts reflect a timeless expression of feeling and emotion and have changed and evolved throughout time. While the arts can include things such as music, painting, and designing, one area that is of important notice is dance. Dance in America has been an expressive movement throughout the decades that has influenced choreographers and even in the modern day.

The biggest dance of the time was the Disco Dancing. Other common dances in the 1970s were the Chicago Stepping and Salsa. The disco culture had started to flow into American values (Jersey 2). Disco Dancing reached a peak of popularity in 1977 when the film “Saturday Night Fever” was released. The rise of late-night clubs and opening of discotheques provided a broad platform for disco dancing (Mlblevins 1).
The 1980s was the height of rock and roll. People started doing a simple back-and-forth movement with their body which is known was Jacking. Another popular practice is to imagine yourself as Egyptian hieroglyphs, using their bodies to make dramatic shapes. This form of dance was known as Voguing (Jersey 2). Voguing started as people trying to pose prettier than each other, and it quickly caught on and danced at balls. The name started as posing but then, because of Vogue magazine, they called it voguing (Hinton 3).
Zumba took ahold of the fitness world in the 1990s. The choreographer Alberto Perez started Zumba as an exercise program. It quickly became a popular and fun way to lose weight (Jersey 2). One day Perez forgot the music tapes for his aerobics class and improvised with his salsa and merengue tapes.
