Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve in Eden, God in His great mercy and grace has been in the process of creating a redemptive path to restore creation, and more specifically, men and women to once again have a loving relationship with Him. The law as given in the Pentateuch and Old Testament, was provided as a means to obtain a loving relationship with His people. The law was given as a means to restore the purpose of His creation. This paper provides a short summary of the situation surrounding the giving of the law, it’s purpose of blessing to Israel and the world, and it’s significance in Israel’s relationship with God. When evaluating the situation surrounding the giving of the law, one can quickly discern the importance of timing when it was delivered. Exodus 1:7 states how God is faithful in His covenant with Abraham, and Abraham’s descendants, Israel, were fruitful becoming a great multitude of people. However, the Egyptians in fear of the number of Israelites oppresses them into slavery. But God is a faithful covenant keeper and creates a redemptive path for His people. God calls Moses to the mountain, and as God descends on the mountain, He meets with Moses and provides to him the Law for the people. Since God is a relational God, the Law is about restoring relationships as God originally intended so that God can dwell among His people. In the Ten Commandments, or the Mosaic covenant, the first four commandments of obedience are about restoring a living relationship with God and our worship of Him, and the next six commandments of obedience are about restoring a living relationship with each other.
