Activism is very important to me. In fact, it’s one of the most important things I value. I believe that a huge part of activism is rising above your own struggles so that you can help others do the same. Which is why I’m giving three examples of great people who have done just that. Maya Angelou, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Frederick Douglass were all remarkable people, and I would like to share with you their trials and tribulations.
“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” (Angelou, Letter to My Daughter). If you want an honest example of overcoming adversity and challenges, Maya Angelou is one of the best. Ever since she was a young girl, many challenges were thrown her way. She had to hurdle over roadblocks and barricades all throughout her life. Racism, sexism, discrimination, raising a child on her own, losing many friends and lovers, and so much more. How did she power through it all? Power of will. I have no idea what to say right now, but I will say that Ms. Angelou was a strong woman. I aspire to be like her in many ways. The author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin herself was not of African-American descent, but she did fight for the rights of those who were. Mrs. Stowe once said, “Common sense is seeing things as they are; and doing things as they ought to be.” (Stowe). She believed in equality for all, no matter their race or gender. She would help those in need whenever she could. Mrs. Stowe once helped a young escaped slave by letting him stay the night at her home and providing him with funds when he left the next morning.
