Further, Texas legislature have been trying to file a bill for smartphones being banned while driving. It is our responsibility as drivers to make sure that we are paying attention to the road at all times. Cell phones are a distraction and as a society it shouldn 't be allowed being used while driving because it causes unavoidable accidents. Representative Tom Craddick said “distracted driving is an epidemic in Texas and we must pass a law to address this life-threatening habit.” Texas is one of the only four states that doesn’t have a statewide law on cell phones and driving.

In this era, with technology as a part of everyday life, it has become difficult to use a simple Public Service Announcement (PSA) as a way to reduce distracted drivers. This is due, for the most part, to the developed habit of assuming. People believe, since it’s seen in many shows and commercials, that those ‘bad things’ that come as a result of distracted driving are not likely to occur to them. People want to prove that they are able to do multiple tasks at once and every PSA would be a challenge so to speak, to show they are above average at multitasking. Those such assumptions and aspirations to prove oneself have resulted in such growing rates.

Texting while driving is not a smart decision. It is putting your life on the line, and other peoples. Being distracted on the road is very dangerous to everyone involved. A highly effective approach to the problem of distracted driving is to make its penalties as severe as DUI penalties. This dangerous driving behavior, which has become a national pandemic, refers to objects or activities (either internal or external) that cause a diversion in the driver’s attention. Contrast that with a first-time DUI offender who faces a six-month jail time and a heavy fine of up to $3,000.

The state of Florida does not do what is necessary to prevent distracted driving, just putting laws in place won't solve the problem. Florida needs to realize that driving accidents due to distraction happen daily, hourly even, and just putting up “Safe Phone Zones” and making texting/calling while driving illegal is not what this issue calls for. The legislation in the state of Florida is not able to keep pace with all the distractions drivers deal with. With such developments coming to a head, these regulations that currently exist are falling short. The state needs to take strides in the right direction of educating rather than enforcing.
