Obamas political speech was about putting racial differences aside and focusing on more important issues. Such as health care, climate change, terrorist threats, and a falling economy (Barack, 2008). The thesis of Obamas speech was connecting races and pulling the differences into the light. The main purpose of the speech was to answer for racial comments that Reverend Wright had made. The speech barely touches on that and focuses more on the subject of race in America. I felt the speech was slow moving and carefully executed. However, since it’s a political speech, it means he has to pay extra attention to what’s he is saying and what the people are taking away from it. I myself felt the speech was persuasive. It appears as early as the seventh paragraph; where he talks about his lineage. It makes us feel closer to him because some of us can connect with what he is saying. Others may feel more trusting of him because he is opening up about himself. The most compelling example of pathos is Ashley’s story. Which is the story of a white woman who organized Obamas campaign in South Carolina. She talks about how her mother got cancer and how she made cuts in her own life to take the stress and worry out of her mothers. I feel this is the most compelling because I feel everyone in their lives had made cuts for family. Yet another example of pathos is shown when he talks about his grandma. How she loved her mixed grandson, but still utter racial slurs. A final example of the many pathos appeals throughout this speech is when Obama is talking about Reverend Wright. Explaining how “as imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me” (Barack, 2008). Which is a moving one because it reminds everyone of what mistakes their own families have made. Making it seem like Wright is just a normal person and normal people make mistakes and get angry. Obamas main use of pathos aims at family stories. It is a conflict breaker that creates a thread between two opposing groups. A clear example of this is when he compares black anger and white anger. That each community had something to be angry about. Also, how dismissing the complaints of either side will only widen the divide between them.
