According to statistics there are more than two million incarcerated adults in federal, state, and county jail. This is nearly an entire percent of the United States’ total population. These millions of people are put in these jailts in an attempt to prevent numerous crimes from happening. The most common crimes being theft, burglary, assault and more. These “petty crimes” cost retailers nearly 32 billion dollars due to shoplifting with some citing even higher numbers, up to 60 billion dollars each year, lost to people with sticky fingers who seem to need to hold onto things they know they cannot afford. Jail is the only logical explanation then how else can we stop these selfish people from taking what does not belong to them? In jail, there is nothing to steal of value. In jail, the public can rest easy knowing that their expensive television sets are safe while inmates can attempt to steal the bare necessities: food, clothing, and hygiene products. With these bare necessities, we also offer rehabilitation. For those who do make it outside, they understand that expensive television sets, expensive cars or even expensive shoes surprisingly do not matter when you know that you cannot afford rent, lights, or food. …show more content…
In comparison to common petty crimes, the United States faces daily instances of rape, kidnapping and homicide. While extremely uncommon, we cannot allow these crimes to go unpunished. Victims affected by these issues can agree that there is no punishment quite suitable to the one that was inflicted upon themselves.
