“Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” is known as the climax of The Great Awakening, which was the biggest religious movement in history. In 1741, Jonathan Edwards preached his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, to his church, which left his listeners crying and even contemplating suicide. On the surface, “Sinners” has basic religious meaning but, deeper down, he is talking about more than just a religious conversion. Edward’s message to his audience was that there is a wrathful God who will punish all who have not had a change of heart. He portrays this through imagery, repetition, and figurative language.
What once was considered scandalous was now a normal activity. “C.S. Lewis was signally aware of spiritual warfare. He explored this in many of his writings, but it was especially The Screwtape Letters that fired the imagination of personal spiritual warfare” (Potgieter). Edwards’ sermon lasted nearly 6 hours and persisted the idea that God is all powerful and wrathful. In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Edwards uses repetition, imagery, and personification in order to scare and threaten people to conform to a life with Christ.
As “the patient” continues his journey choosing whether to be faithful or not, Wormwood, being the amateur “tempter” he is, fails to give clear direction to “the patient.” “[Temporary success] has gone to your head…” (Lewis 21). A tempter’s, such as Wormwood, biggest task is to continue keeping their patient straying away from Christianity their whole lives. However, Wormwood, getting caught up in mini success along the way, let it get to him and becomes his own stumbling block.
