Understanding this, as we look into the history and development of clinical mental health counseling of this population, we will explore the significant events that have influenced the current services available. Starting in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, we begin to see the documentation of societal changes in how mental illness is viewed. It was initially thought that mental health was hereditary irrevocable, however this shift allowed mental health to be observed through a lense of environmental and social impacts (Erford, B. T., 2017). In 1907 school counselor, Jesse B. Davis, implemented a systemic guidance approach in schools to restore the “moral fiber of American Society” (Erford, B. T., 2017). This was the start to providing counseling for children. The 1920’s saw an increased interest in the exploration and management of mental health of children. A scientific approach was developed to conduct testing and diagnosis early for the purpose of implementing interventions and treatments to treat maladjustment behaviors in children (Erford, B. T., 2017). It wasn’t until the Great Depression where counseling expanded to social agencies in a response to the societal and economic impact towards the mental health of the population from unemployment. My experience as a counselor consists of 2 years as an intern and 8 years as a counselor with Homoud Health Services, LLC. I’ve accumulated over 3,500 hours of supervision conducted by a licensed counselor through the state of Virginia. For the last 2 years I have provided counseling services in mobile crisis services, community crisis services, mental health skill building services, and intensive in-home services.
