“I said it because it’s true. It’s the way they live. It’s the life that was created for them” (Lowry 153). In the novel The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, people live their lives without love, or compassion. In this dystopian society, everything is chosen for the people. Including their jobs, education, and even their families. The people have no control, nor choice in their own life. Everyone in the community lives in sameness. They live in a world where everything is black and white; no color at all. Since this dystopian society has rules that control the choices of people’s families and jobs, they now have no feeling of pain, nor love in their life.

For example, if someone wanted to become a teacher when they were growing up, then that is what they would become. On the other hand, in the dystopian society, someone would have to wait till they were twelve years of age to know what their job was going to be. In the middle of the novel, the author states, “Then, at last, the Chief Elder called number One to the stage, the Assignments began. Each announcement was lengthy, accompanied by a speech directed at the new Twelve” (Lowry 52). Once everyone turns twelve in the dystopia, they gather together with their families and the Elders, to discover their job. In our society we go to high school and college to get our diploma, so that we can apply for any job, of our choice. Yet, in the dystopia they only have to be twelve to get there job. They do not need a diploma, or an application to get a job, it is just chosen for them. However, in both societies everyone would have to be a certain age to get a job.
