“Dystopia, by definition, promises a darker story” (Lauren DeStefano). This means that a dream doesn’t become reality through magic. In the novel, The Giver , by Luis Lowry, Jonas is part of a dystopia. A Dystopia is the complete opposite of a perfect world, a dystopian society would be like a world full of hate, racism, etc. A Utopia is a perfect world. Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between Jonas’s community and my community are remarkable. First, there are many similarities in The Giver and modern society. In both societies, you must apologize after making a mistake or doing something wrong. In the text it says, “ Desperately the pilot had been trying to make his way back before his error was noticed. NEEDLESS TO SAY, HE WOULD BE RELEASED, the voice had said, followed by silence” (Lowry, 3). This shows that Jonas;s society also has punishments for after someone breaks a law or rule. Next, there are several differences in The Giver and modern society. My society and Jonas’s society both have completely different laws and rules. In the novel, The Giver, it says, “ The children all received their bicycles at nine; they were not allowed to ride bicycles before then” (Lowry, 17). This shows how in Jonas’s community you receive bicycles at age 9 but were not allowed to ride bicycles before then. In my community, we are allowed to have a bike at whatever age and are allowed to use it whenever we feel like it. Jonas’s society is very distinct from my society when it comes to punishments. According to Lowry on page 207, “ He thought of the rules he had broken so far; enough that if he were caught, now, he would be condemned”.
