Noble savage; someone who began life innocent and becomes corrupt as they gain knowledge. "I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel" (page 87), as knowledge is acquired, so is the evil in the world. In Mary Shelly’s novel Frankenstein, a creature is left to deal with the difficulties of growing up and gaining knowledge without anyone to show him the ropes and the averse feelings the world had against him. Frankie is a noble savage because he was meant for good, but the evil in the world took over him. He wanted human relationships, but no one could see past his looks and large stature. As frankie gained knowledge and seeked the comfort of the human race, he realized that everyone was afraid and didn’t give him the time of day. When Frankie gained knowledge --- so that he could understand the human race and their feeling --- he developed ardent hatred toward Victor, his creator, for creating and leaving him. Frankie seeked revenge against humans, especially Victor. While trying to find a place to stay, Frankie came upon a hut. He had no knowledge of why people acted out towards him, he states, “... and perceiving me, shrieked loudly, and quitting the hut, ran across the fields…” (page 93). He was hurt and confused when the man left quickly and was screaming. Frankie had not yet acquired the knowledge that would lead him to understand why the man ran and why it hurt him. Little did he know that once he learned the language of the humans and what his feelings meant, he would become angry at the world. So, when the cottagers that Frankie became attached to rejected him, he “... bore a hell within me, and finding myself unsympathised with, wished to tear up the trees, spread havoc and destruction around me, and then to have sat back and enjoyed the ruin” (page 125).
