In the play “The Crucible”, by Arthur Miller, grudges and personal rivalries play a huge role in the witch trials. Mary and Elizabeth get accused for witchcraft at one point of time in the book. They get accused because of the personal rivalry that Abigail and John Proctor have with each other. John Proctor and Abigail used to meet up behind the shed by the church. This brought them closer together and Abigail's feelings for John got worse and worse.
In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible Abigail Williams, a young, headstrong woman , is the main villain of this story. Most people will say Abigail is the victim but the only thing she is a victim of is a broken heart. The reasons of her being the fellon are she started the witch hoax and tried to rid of Goody Proctor. Abigail commenced the whole witch hoax in order to save herself from getting into trouble for ‘dancing’ in the woods.
In The Crucible, I believe that Abigail could have ended the mass hysteria in Salem by being honest and not having an affair at an age that you're still young, Abigail was wrong for just accusing anyone in her way to get them hanged which she could’ve stopped the hysteria just by owning up to her problems. Abigail never meant to get john proctor to hanged after all abigail just wanted proctor all to her self. Abigail was upset because she viewed Elizabeth as an inconvenience just because she is preventing Abigail from being with Proctor. “ Did you come to see me John I almost forgot how strong you are” To this moment Abigail was with Procter but he denied that he didn't want anything to do with her.
Abigail is seeking Elizabeth’s death by framing her for witchcraft. Abigail is jealous that Elizabeth is the wife of John Proctor and she has become vindictive. John affirmed that Abigail and he were once in love and stated, “She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave!” (Miller 1333).
Abigail was the one that started all of this because she was accused of witchery but instead of accepting the fact, she ends up accusing other people of witchcraft. She blackmailed the girls to not say a word or they will die. She wanted all of them to pretend to be summoned by the demon so they can accuse other people of witchery. In the book on page 19, “Let either of you breathe a word, or edge of a word. About the other things, and i will come to you in the black of some terrible nights and i will bring a pointy reckoning that will shatter you”.

Within these trials, there were multiple accusations that were made about who was really involved in the witch trials, many of the characters who were falsely and baselessly accused were innocent. The falsification that were created by the main character of The Crucible, Abigail Williams were only for her own benefit to protect herself from being accused as one of the “witches” or had she had been there in the forest the night there was witchcraft . Elizabeth found out about the affair and Elizabeth told Abigail not to mess with her husband or she will regret it. Abigail confesses to withcraft saying that she gave her soul to the devil. She convinced other girls to cast spells with Tituba. She carefully planned the way she accused people in the community of withcraft , so she could be credible when she accused Elizabeth.
Abigail A 17 year old girl who portrays herself to be sweet and kind, but is truly not what everything thinks she is. Abigail at one time worked in Proctor’s home. She was dismissed from Proctor’s home because Elizabeth found out what was going on. Abigail started to point fingers at people and telling lies to get back at Proctor. Abigail’s pay back to him affects everyone.

The result of the trials included over two hundred people accused and twenty deaths. Of all the accusers, Abigail Williams was the most responsible for the Salem Witch Trials. Abigail Williams had been involved in an affair between John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor. Williams was removed from the Proctor house as soon as Elizabeth Proctor found out about the affair.
Greatest of The Guilty The character in The Crucible who was the most guilty for the events that transpired was Abigail Williams because of her sin of lechery that led to jealousy and damaged pride, her choice to lie rather than taking responsibility, and for judging good people as being hypocritical that had to be dealt with. As a result of Abigail’s lechery with John Proctor, she felt jealous towards Elizabeth Proctor and judged by the other townspeople. Her jealousy and pride made people targets during the witch trials. When talking to John she states, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me!
What if the most loved and cared for people were punished and killed because of a girl trying to cover up her own mistakes she made, but created an even bigger one by doing so. A girl named Abigail Williams went against the law along with many other girls and practiced witchery, knowing you could be killed for it. Once confronted, she took many innocent people down along with her, in hopes of covering her mistake up. By doing so, she created a mass hysteria in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, just to save her own life. A thought out plan containing selfish acts, manipulation and hatred created a tragic mess in a once beloved town.
Abigail The Victim In the Crucible many are to blame for the events that occurred, but one of the one’s who seems to take blame the most is Abigail Williams. She holds most of the responsibility because she was to blame for the girls meeting with Tituba in the woods. When Parris located the girls in the woods, Abigail tries to hide her behavior because she fears that it will uncover her affair with Proctor if she confesses that she attempted to cast a spell on his wife, Elizabeth. Abigail also lies to avoid being punished for witchcraft.
Abigail believed that Proctor actually loved her and she waited every night for him. She was brainwashed to think he would leave his wife for her. The witchcraft accusation came from the beginning of the story when Abigail and the girls were dancing naked in the woods and chanting. She made false accusations that people in the village were worshipping the devil to cover what she had done. Many lives were taken but Abigail had no empathy for anyone who was hanged.
A crucible is a difficult test or challenge; it can also be described as a place or situation that forces people to make a difficult decision. “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller shows many different situations where people are tested. Each test reveals someone's true nature, some were brave and courageous, while others were cowards and selfish. Rebecca Nurse and Abigail Williams were both tested, and something different was revealed about each of them. Rebecca Nurse was tested throughout the book, and it was shown that she is strong and stands for what she believes in.
