In the Crucible there are many heinous characters, but for me the most despicable is Abigail. The two reasons that I find her to be the most despicable is because she somehow got all her friends to perform satanic rituals with her in the forest, and also the fact that she and her friends all lied about it, which put many innocent people in jeopardy. In the beginning of the book, Parris sees a large group of girls dancing in the forest naked. As he was approaching the girls to see what was going on, all the girls ran away screaming, leaving behind a pot with a ladel and a frog in it.
Abigail can be described as villainous for being a notorious liar. A prime example of this villainous behavior is shown when Betty is waking from her sleep during the beginning of the play. The girls are discussing about how they should cover up the truth about the night in the woods, when Betty starts to cry out. In the midst of her distress, Betty exposes Abigail and gives the reader more insight as to what went on in the woods that night. “You drank blood, Abby!
Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Once reading this book in my Honors English Course at the number one high school in the state of California, we carefully analyzed the characters, going as far as even making character charts, to understand them and their intentions much better. In The Crucible, a movie based on the play written by Arthur Miller, fear constantly motivates Abigail Williams to make decisions that will not only determine the fate of members of her town, but Puritanism itself. In Act 1, while accusing an innocent black lady known as Tituba, Abigail pleads to Reverand Hale saying “She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer!” (Miller 272) Abigail attacks Tituba’s harmless reputation by accusing her of something that is completely against their religion. With fear of being charged of her wrongdoings in the forest with the other girls, she seeks a scapegoat to divert the accusation of guilt away from herself.
In the small town of Salem Massachusetts around springtime in 1692, many problems have occurred. But none more potent and dangerous than witchcraft. The buzz of the theory or sorcery happening in the town riled up the people who are ready to go witch hunting. However in a small twist of events, many women were falsely accused of being apart of the sorcerers and were left alone to face the consequences. But who could be responsible for these actions?
The Crucible takes place in 1692, in Salem when several women have been accused of witchcraft including John and Elizabeth Proctor’s maid, Abigail Williams. Abigail was later fired, not for dancing naked in the woods and caught by Parris, but for having an affair with John Proctor. Once caught, they accused the townspeople and how witchcraft possessed them. A huge court session begins. To determine whether or not someone was innocent or guilty, the girls and Abigail would distress the ones they thought were guilty by screaming and fainting.
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Miller introduces the idea, apparent in today’s world, that sometimes people blame others to save themselves from punishment through the characters’ actions and the asides from Miller. The most prominent character that displays this theme is Abigail Williams. Several times Abigail pushes the blame on others when she senses trouble. When Parris finds the girls dancing in the forest, Abigail knows she has to do something to avoid punishment.
There are several characters in The Crucible who use the witch hunts for personal gain. The worst amongst these villains is Abigail Williams, who is very manipulative. Although Abigail is a young, beautiful, teenage orphan she will not stop until she has John Proctor to herself. John is a middle aged man who is married to Elizabeth Proctor, but committed adultery and had an affair with Abigail. She creates lies to save herself and hurt others.
There are three types of people in this world, those who fake it to make it, those who want it and go get it, and those who manipulate others to achieve it. Arthur Miller's classic, The Crucible, presents Abigail Williams as a despicable character in the play through her manipulative, dishonest, and self-centered behavior. Throughout the play she used manipulation to bring confusion and pain to the people in Salem. Manipulation was her biggest quality. Abigail uses manipulation as a weapon to obtain the love and affection of John Proctor.
Hook: Lustful wretchedness consumed a young sinful girl, putting her in a state of delusion. This girl’s actions contributed to a mass hysteria that only she could have put a stop to. Exposition: The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is an analogy highlighting the mass hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare. Thesis: The character, Abigail Williams, not only contributed to this madness but also had the ability to extinguish the hysteria but chose to feed into the idea of her being the person John Proctor would end up with. She vividly displayed signs of manipulation, menacingly actions, and conditions of derangement.

Metamorphosis In prominent works of literature, there is always one character or a handful that cling to minds of readers. This could be due to the characters’ heroic deeds that are deeply admirable. On the other extreme, characters can encapsulate all we despise, making it a challenge to not link the story as a whole to the actions of one character in our minds. One such example of this extreme is Abigail Williams, easily the most despicable and vile character of The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller.
We often hear that betrayal can lead to deadly effects, with this in mind, in the story The Cruicible, betrayal is the wall from truth. The play took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. During this time strange acts were appearing all around Salem. As a result of these acts people blamed each other to exclude themselves from death, knowing that such acts were considered witchcraft. Abigail Williams is one of those people.
In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, many characters are falsely accused of witchcraft, but one character sticks out as resoundingly innocent. Giles Corey was accused because he would not betray a friend to the court. At the beginning of Act III, Giles, Francis Nurse, and John Proctor enter the court to plead for their wives’ innocence (1316). They carry with them a deposition signed by Mary Warren saying that she never saw any spirits (1318).

When a person is accused of witchcraft, it is very easy for them to get out of the accusation if they lie. The lies that are told shifts the belief of who knows witchcraft, and Abigail Williams uses those lies to gain influence over other people.
