Would you ever lie to get yourself out of trouble, even if dangers such as jail time and execution are involved? Would you put someone else’s life on the line just to prove your innocence, even when you are not innocent at all? In the play “The Crucible” By Arthur Miller, there was a major incident in the woods that turned into something uncalled for. The main Character, Abigail Williams, had thirty-nine people executed because of her lies and accusations. Thirty-nine innocent people hanged because she simply didn’t want to be truthful from the beginning . Abigail is responsible because the altercation that happened in the woods weren’t truthfully expressed in court, she also blamed people for things they didn’t do so that she can protect herself from being hanged. Anyone that was accused of witchcraft would be hanged if they didn’t confess. Abigail told the people that Tituba forced them to participate in witchcraft when Tituba didn’t force them to do anything. Now that the girls are afraid of Abigail, they agree with anything she says, whether it’s the truth or a lie. Abigail even accused Elizabeth Proctor because of an affair she had with her husband, John Proctor. Abigail wants her dead, so she could take her place as John Proctor’s wife. She is jealous, and thinks that John Proctor loves her because of the affair, so now Elizabeth’s life is on the line. Also, Abigail blames Mary Warren of witchcraft because she confessed and told the judge that the girls had never been taken over witchcraft, but to cover Mary’s story. They made it seem like Mary sent her “evil spirit” to attack her and the other girls. Everything Mary said they mimicked, howling and screaming.
