The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, focuses on the town of Salem, Massachusetts, during the deplorable witch trials revolving around the 1600's. Within these trials, there were multiple accusations that were made about who was really involved in the witch trials, many of the characters who were falsely and baselessly accused were innocent. The falsification that were created by the main character of The Crucible, Abigail Williams were only for her own benefit to protect herself from being accused as one of the “witches” or had she had been there in the forest the night there was witchcraft . Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Once reading this book in my Honors English Course at the number one high school in the state of California, we carefully analyzed the characters, going as far as even making character charts, to understand them and their intentions much better. The Crucible takes place in 1692, in Salem when several women have been accused of witchcraft including John and Elizabeth Proctor’s maid, Abigail Williams. Abigail was later fired, not for dancing naked in the woods and caught by Parris, but for having an affair with John Proctor. Once caught, they accused the townspeople and how witchcraft possessed them. A huge court session begins. To determine whether or not someone was innocent or guilty, the girls and Abigail would distress the ones they thought were guilty by screaming and fainting.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Miller introduces the idea, apparent in today’s world, that sometimes people blame others to save themselves from punishment through the characters’ actions and the asides from Miller. The most prominent character that displays this theme is Abigail Williams. Several times Abigail pushes the blame on others when she senses trouble. When Parris finds the girls dancing in the forest, Abigail knows she has to do something to avoid punishment.

The story takes place in 1690’s Salem, where power is based on factors such as gender, marital status, race, or how much property one owns. However, near the end of Act One, there is a shift in the power structure when Abigail, an unmarried girl, becomes arguably the most powerful person in town when she begins a pattern of blame that eventually launched the witch hunts. In the play, The Crucible, Abigail Williams and a group of girls danced and conjured spirits in the woods and began the hysteria of witchcraft in Salem. As the story unfolds, Abigail starts out as a troublemaker and gets caught in the woods. She lies to her uncle and tries to save herself but gets caught and fesses up. She is also obsessed with John Proctor, who is trying to push her away after an affair. Abigail was most responsible for witchcraft in Salem and should be held responsible for the imprisonment and execution of innocent people because she lied to all of the townspeople first and had an affair with John Proctor.
In this paper I will argue that Abigail Williams is not a trustworthy person. Abigail is an orphan she has constant to feel important and wanted.she was involved in an affair with John Proctor .She hates his wife because she spreads rumors about her. Abigail begins to show me her true character through the scene describing her dancing in the woods. While they were in the woods Abigail was setting a spell on John Proctor's wife.
In The Crucible, Arthur Miller utilizes the main antagonist, Abigail Williams, to further emphasize the physiological theme that one will go to great measures to preserve the way others perceive them. He writes her into the story as a crazy teenage girl who is hungry for trouble, which allows him to eventually display how even though the village did not show it in the beginning, the people were just as corrupt. Miller begins to uncover this truth when Abigail is caught dancing in the woods by her uncle, Parris. Instead of confessing that she was dancing for the devil she instead tells her uncle that “[they] did dance,” (Miller.1.1.12) but she informs him that “[they] never conjured spirits'' (1.1.21).
She’s the woman who holds grudges, is selfish, and a great liar. Abigail seems to be especially gifted at spreading destruction and chaos wherever she goes. She is able to manipulate others, for example, all her friends and the whole town. In addition, she obtains control over all of them and sends nineteen uninvolved people to their deaths. All these things add up.
