The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, focuses on the town of Salem, Massachusetts, during the deplorable witch trials revolving around the 1600's. Within these trials, there were multiple accusations that were made about who was really involved in the witch trials, many of the characters who were falsely and baselessly accused were innocent. The falsification that were created by the main character of The Crucible, Abigail Williams were only for her own benefit to protect herself from being accused as one of the “witches” or had she had been there in the forest the night there was witchcraft . Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Once reading this book in my Honors English Course at the number one high school in the state of California, we carefully analyzed the characters, going as far as even making character charts, to understand them and their intentions much better. Abigail was able to influence the people around her which allowed her to be saved from death and she put the lives of other innocent civilians at risk. After the word traveled around how Reverend Parris’ had caught her niece, Abigail Williams, and daughter, Betty Parris, doing something along the lines of witchcraft and Abigail explained part of what had happened. Abigail had said that she admits to dancing in the woods with her friends while Tituba sang her Barbados songs and she also said that Tituba tried to conjure a spirit. As a result, she had blamed someone for her actions and began the witchcraft hysteria because she withheld information. Next, the character that is portrayed as manipulative and self-preserved, Abigail, knew that her omission wouldn’t save her for long which was why she threatened her friends that were with her that night.
In The Crucible, a movie based on the play written by Arthur Miller, fear constantly motivates Abigail Williams to make decisions that will not only determine the fate of members of her town, but Puritanism itself. In Act 1, while accusing an innocent black lady known as Tituba, Abigail pleads to Reverand Hale saying “She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer!” (Miller 272) Abigail attacks Tituba’s harmless reputation by accusing her of something that is completely against their religion. With fear of being charged of her wrongdoings in the forest with the other girls, she seeks a scapegoat to divert the accusation of guilt away from herself.

The buzz of the theory or sorcery happening in the town riled up the people who are ready to go witch hunting. The way someone appears, or acts, is not necessarily always correct or truthful. In the book The Crucible, the Forest Girls, Abigail, Susana, Mary and the others, effectively deceive the townsfolk into believing that witchcraft is practiced in Salem. Abigail Williams is not as innocent as she portrays herself. She misrepresents herself as a virtuous young girl who was unjustly affected by witchcraft. During an escapade in Act III, the girls become disillusioned by Mary Warren who attempts to expose the charges of witchcraft as mere acts of vengeance.
During the late 1600’s tragic events took place in a town called Salem. A few girls fell ill, falling victim to hallucinations and seizures, which caused Salem a religious town to start thinking someone was casting spells. “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, was created because of the witch trials and the effects it had on the colony. There were lots of men and women accused of this "witchcraft"; however, less than 20 were hung. Although the town of Salem embraced these trials as a template for their envy and hate, one young woman; Abigail Williams, who is the ringleader of it all.
