Admirable Man
The flaws of a person can not be taken into consideration when determining if someone is admirable. For five years, Jay Gatsby transforms himself to become a man Daisy Buchanan would marry. While admiring Daisy from afar, he acquires money through illegal work so he can fit her standards of a rich man. Nevertheless, he treats the people around him with kindness and compassion. Even as his dream of being with Daisy comes crashing down, Gatsby protects and cares for the people he loves. In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the protagonist, Jay Gatsby, is a great man.

From the moment Gatsby met Nick he referred to him as “old sport” (Fitzgerald 48). Gatsby uses a term of endearment to refer to the people he is closest to. He wants to portray his care and interest in their lives to prove he is a good man. Furthermore, when he is desperate to meet Daisy again, Gatsby does not pressure Nick to allow them to meet at his house. Instead, he allows Nick to decide a day that works for him and helps set up for the meeting because he does not “want to put [him through] any trouble” (Fitzgerald 82). Gatsby recognizes he is asking a lot from Nick and does not want to put him in a situation he does not want to be in. Moreover, he gives him an opportunity to refuse to help because he cares about Nick's feelings. He shows that he is not a selfish man since he is not forcing Nick to do anything. He also proves he is not self-centered when he helps Daisy. After Daisy hit and killed Myrtle, Gatsby promises that he will “say [he] was [driving]” (Fitzgerald 143). Gatsby shows his love for Daisy by trying to protect her in any way he can. He does not want Daisy to be hurt and cares for her well-being. This shows he is a respectable man because, even though Daisy never said she loves him, Gatsby still treats her kindly.
